Biliran guv expresses full support on anti-rabies program implementation

NAVAL, Biliran, Sept. 22 (PIA) — “Kung gusto nyo ng dog leash, bibigyan ko kayo. Kung gusto nyo nga dog collar, bibigyan ko kayo (If you want dog leash, I will provide you. If you want dog collar, I will provide you), said Biliran Governor Rogelio J. Espina in his message during the World Rabies Day Celebration held at the Naval Gymnasium on September 17.

Governor Espina made the statement after he was dismayed over the continuing incidence of positive canine rabies cases in the province since 2016 up to the present.

Based on the record of the Provincial Statistical Update on Rabies Program, the Province of Biliran was declared as Rabies-Free Zone in 2012.

The status as a Rabies -Free Zone was not maintained when two positive canine rabies cases were recorded in 2016 in Almeria, Biliran on September 8, 2016 and in Kawayan, Biliran on October 9, 2016.

Two positive rabies cases were recorded each in 2017 and 2018, one in 2019, and six for 2020 with the last recorded positive rabies case in Atipolo, Naval on August 24.

Governor Espina also vowed to provide incentives to trained barangay dog vaccinators who complemented the LGU personnel in the dog vaccination at the barangay level.

Part of the support he mentioned is the provision of five kilos commercial rice to dog owners who submit their dogs for castration.

He also assured the availability of anti-rabies vaccines by next year even at the barangay level so that vaccination of dogs will be done right in the 132 barangays of the province.

Governor Espina also called on the barangay officials to do their part in the effective, efficient and sustainable implementation of the rabies prevention and control program of the province to contain the continuous incidence of positive canine rabies cases.

He informed the audience who attended the World Rabies Day Celebration that a new provincial anti-rabies ordinance will be enforced in the next few days to give more teeth for an effective and efficient implementation of the rabies prevention and control program. (ldl/rsv/PIA-Biliran)
